The Crimes We Commit Against Our Website | Basic Website SEO Tips
In this blog I am going to explain how you can apply these basic website SEO tips to rank your website on Google, especially in Nepal.
SEO is one of those terms that is thrown around very lightly in Nepali tech industry.
As a Search Engine Optimization startup providing SEO services in Nepal, we found it our duty to educate people on performing a basic SEO audit of their website to improve Google rankings.
Performing a website SEO analysis can sound intimidating and of course, just doing basic SEO won’t help rank on Google, right?
You will be amazed at how many people that run a website have very limited understanding of SEO in Nepal, so you often only need to get the basics right to succeed on SEO!
Let’s get started with the best SEO tips 2019:
1. Mobile Friendly Website
Pop in your website URL on the Google’s Mobile Friendly Test Tool and see if your website passes the test.
I don’t think it is necessary to highlight the importance of having a mobile friendly website but I will do it anyways.
According to this statistic, Mobile traffic was responsible for 52.2% of all the Internet traffic. That is amazing!
More than half of the worlds traffic is now coming from mobile.
If your site didn’t pass the test, contact your webmaster ASAP and get this fixed. You are missing out on a huge chunk of traffic.
2. Site Speed
Google has indicated that Site Speed is one of the factors, the algorithm looks for while ranking webpages.
How long do you wait for a site to load? Studies show that, 47% of consumers expect a website to load in 2 seconds or less.
Here are a couple of tools to diagnose your website loading speed.
Enter your website URL in GTMetrix.
I’ve been using GTMetrix for quite a long time now. It not only ranks your website depending on the loading speed, but also provides with solutions to fix the issue.
Isn’t that amazing?
It tells you exactly what needs to be fixed. On top of that, it is absolutely FREE!
Once you know what needs fixing, search for the solution online. If you are on WordPress, a simple plugin can fix your problem.
Do this you will improve your site speed exponentially.
Another useful tool I use is Google Page Speed Insights. This is the same as GTMetrix and you can discover more useful tips to improve your website.
Try them out and see which one fits for you. Personally, I use both to discover what is slowing my website down.
3. Technical SEO
Alright, now we are moving on to the interesting parts of SEO.
Before we dive in, let me provide an overview. Basically, SEO can be divided into 3 parts:
- On Page SEO – This has to do with improving user experience and keywords.
- Off Page SEO – This mostly deals with building authority and links.
- Technical SEO – This has to do with how search engines interact with the website.
I won’t go into details of technical SEO for the sake of this blog. You can learn more about it here.
But if you want a quick and easy way that provides an almost instantaneous result, here is what you can do:
Upload XML Sitemap
A good XML sitemap acts as a road map for your website which leads Google to all your important pages.
Even if this falls under technical SEO, it isn’t all that technical and is very easy to implement. You don’t need to know how to code.
If you are on WordPress, install Yoast SEO plugin to get started.
You can then find a detailed guide on implementing Sitemaps on Yoast SEO here.
Here’s the thing about site architecture. No post or link on your website should be more than three or four clicks away.
The principle to follow is to KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid!
Make the links easier for both the crawler and your visitors to find.
Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual pages and blog posts, as well as your category and tag archives .
They play a very important role on boosting your page SEO. Here are some tips while defining your permalinks:
- Use keyword rich URL
- Keep consistent permalink structure throughout the website
- Avoid dates in your URL
- Start using HTTPS
- Keep them short
Web site owners use the /robots.txt file to give instructions about their site to web crawlers.
This is how it works:
Let’s say, a crawler wants to access your site at https://example.com/index.html
Before it does, it checks for a robots.txt file
The “User-agent: *” means this applies to all the robots trying to access the site.
The “Disallow: /wp-admin/” means the robots are not allowed to visit this folder.
If you make it “Disallow: /” then, the crawler is not allowed to crawl the site at all.
All the robots and crawlers respect the robots.txt file except the malware robots of course.
4. Content Marketing
This is one of the sure fire way of drastically improving your website SEO.
A content can be any of the following:
- A Blog
- An Infographics
- A Podcast
- An Interview
Try to find 50 different questions your customers have in your market. Write 50 blog posts answering these questions in depth.
Trust me, this may sound like a lot of work but if you do this, Google will give a huge boost to your website.
Here are some of the places you can find topics to write about:
This one sounds obvious but most people don’t harvest the true potential of Google Search.
If you sell fender guitars online, go on to google search, and type “buy fender guitars online“
You are presented with questions that your target customers are having and desperately want the answers.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you’ll find Related Search. These are goldmines for content writers.
You can get more content ideas from:
Just type in your product or services and get more creative blog ideas.
5. Link Building
Basically, link building is the process of other websites linking back to you. Every link from a relevant website acts as a vote of confidence on your behalf.
In fact, Google even said, “Link building is one of the top ranking factor and that ranking without links is really, really hard.
So, as someone who is relatively new in the market, how do you go about building links.
Here are some quick tips:
You can volunteer to write a blog post for another website in return for a backlink. Most websites would be happy to publish your post (if it is of high quality) since they themselves are struggling to put out content.
Broken Link Building
As an SEO service provider, I do lots of SEO audits on websites. During this process, I come up with lots of broken links (links that point to nowhere or that give 404 error). Having a broken link on the website is considered dangerous for SEO.
Here is where you come in. You mail the author of the blog saying that you found a broken link on their website, that you are just trying to help. If they are happy, they might link back at you.
Just Ask For A Link
As someone once said
“If you don’t ask, the answer is always NO!”
Sometimes you just got to ask for it. But you must provide something of value in return.
Here is a nice tip by Neil Patel on building backlinks.
Thus, I have only grazed the surface of website SEO on this blog. However, if you are just starting out, following these steps will help rank higher on Google and attract more customers.
On the other hand, there aren’t many SEO experts in Nepal. This results in poorly managed websites which makes ranking YOUR website all that much easier.
Hope you found this blog useful.
See ya on the first page of Google!
